Proper Sizing: Why Arizona Heat Changes the Math
Oversized and undersized systems are among the most common installation mistakes we see. A system that's too large short-cycles, wears out early, and leaves the house clammy. One that's too small runs nonstop and can't keep up in July.
Equipment also loses capacity as outdoor temperatures climb. A 5-ton unit does not deliver the same cooling at 115°F that it does at 100°F. That's why we size by your home, not by the old unit's label. We look at:
- Square footage, insulation, ceiling height, and window area and orientation
- Sun exposure, including west-facing rooms and two-story heat gain
- Ductwork size, condition, and leakage
- How your household actually uses the space
Understanding SEER2 and HSPF2 Ratings
Heat pumps have two efficiency ratings. SEER2 measures cooling efficiency and HSPF2 measures heating efficiency. For both, a higher number means lower operating costs. Current federal minimums for new split-system heat pumps are 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2.

The Refrigerant Change: R-410A to R-454B and R-32
Under EPA rules, new residential heat pumps and air conditioners have moved away from R-410A to lower-GWP refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32. What that means for you:
- New heat pump systems installed today use the newer refrigerants.
- The outdoor unit and indoor coil need to be matched and designed for the same refrigerant, so a like-for-like outdoor-only swap often isn't an option.
- Your existing R-410A system can still be repaired. Replacing it is a choice, not a requirement.

Is a heat pump powerful enough for Arizona summers?

Can I replace my AC and gas furnace with a heat pump?
