Why Is My AC Running but Not Cooling?

This is the most common call we get in summer. The usual causes, from most to least common:

• Failed capacitor or contactor. The outdoor unit hums or won't start, but the indoor fan still blows. These parts fail constantly in Arizona heat and are usually a quick fix.
• Dirty filter or restricted airflow. Weak airflow can freeze the indoor coil and cut cooling to almost nothing. Check your filter first.
• Frozen evaporator coil. Ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor unit, often from low airflow or low refrigerant. Turn the system off and switch the fan to "on" to let it thaw, then call for service.
• Refrigerant leak. A system that slowly loses cooling over weeks, or runs all day without reaching the set temperature, is often low on refrigerant. We find and fix the leak rather than just topping it off.
• Dirty or blocked outdoor coil. Dust, monsoon debris, and plants packed against the condenser keep it from releasing heat.
• Failing compressor or fan motor. This is less common, but more likely on older systems and during long heat waves.

Quick checks before you call: make sure the thermostat is set to "cool" and below room temperature, replace a dirty filter, and check the breaker for the outdoor unit. If the breaker trips again, leave it off and call us, because repeated resets can damage the compressor.

What Affects AC Repair Cost?

The price depends on the part that failed, the refrigerant your system uses, and how accessible the equipment is, for example a rooftop package unit versus a ground-level split system.

• Smaller repairs such as capacitors, contactors, clogged drains, and thermostat problems are the most common and least expensive.
• Mid-range repairs include fan and blower motors, and finding and fixing leaks.
• Major repairs include compressors and coils. On older systems, compare these against replacement first.

Systems that use R-22 refrigerant cost more to recharge because R-22 is no longer produced. R-410A systems can still be repaired and recharged normally.

Should You Repair or Replace Your AC?

Repair usually makes sense when the system is under about 10 years old and the problem is a single component. Replacement is worth pricing when:

• The system is 12–15+ years old. Arizona heat shortens equipment life.
• The compressor or coil has failed out of warranty.
• It still uses R-22.

• Bills keep climbing or the house never fully cools on hot afternoons.

Does Your Home Have a Heat Pump?

How to Prevent the Next Breakdown

• Get an AC tune-up every spring, before the first 100°F week.
• Change your filter every 1–3 months, and more often during dust season.
• Keep about 2 feet of clearance around the outdoor unit and rinse the coil after dust storms.
• Don't ignore early signs such as new noises, longer run times, or water near the indoor unit.

Why is water leaking from my indoor AC unit?

Usually the condensate drain line is clogged, or a frozen coil is melting. Turn the system off to prevent water damage and call for service.

Why does my AC keep tripping the breaker?

Common causes are a failing capacitor, a compressor drawing too much current, or damaged wiring. Don't keep resetting it. Leave the breaker off and have it diagnosed.

Is it normal for my AC to run all day in the summer?

On 110°F+ afternoons, long run times can be normal for a properly sized system. If it runs all day and still can't get close to the set temperature, or it runs constantly on milder days, something is wrong.
